Relocating to Spain is an exciting life change—but if you’re planning to bring your dog, cat, or other pet, it’s essential to prepare properly. Spain is a pet-friendly country with great weather, outdoor spaces, and a relaxed lifestyle that many animals enjoy. But there are rules and requirements you’ll need to follow to ensure your pet’s entry goes smoothly.
Here’s a guide to everything you need to know about bringing pets to Spain from the UK or other countries.
📋 Entry Requirements for Pets Coming to Spain
To enter Spain legally with your pet, you must meet the following requirements:
1. Microchip Identification
Your pet must be microchipped with an ISO 11784/11785 compliant chip before (or at the same time as) receiving their rabies vaccination.
2. Rabies Vaccination
- Your pet must be vaccinated against rabies at least 21 days before travel.
- The vaccination must be administered after the microchip is inserted.
- Keep the vaccination certificate safe—it’s required for travel.
3. Animal Health Certificate (AHC) – For UK Travellers
Since Brexit, UK pet passports are no longer valid for travel to the EU. Instead, you’ll need an Animal Health Certificate issued by a vet within 10 days of travel. This applies per trip, so each time you travel, a new AHC is needed.
If you’re travelling from an EU country or have an EU-issued pet passport, the process is simpler.
4. Tapeworm Treatment (Dogs Only)
If you’re returning to the UK, dogs must have tapeworm treatment 1–5 days before travel back to Britain. This isn’t required for entry into Spain but is good to keep in mind for future trips.
✈️ How to Travel with Pets to Spain
🛫 By Plane
- Pets can usually fly as checked baggage or cargo, depending on the airline and size of the animal.
- Some smaller pets may be allowed in the cabin on specific carriers (usually within the EU).
- Make sure to book with a pet-friendly airline and check crate and size requirements in advance.
🚗 By Car or Ferry
Many people prefer to drive through France and cross into Spain by road, especially when travelling with multiple pets. You’ll still need to meet all entry requirements, but this can be a less stressful option for some animals.
🏡 Living in Spain with Pets
Spain is generally very welcoming to pets, but there are a few things to keep in mind:
- Dogs must be kept on leads in most public areas, and some breeds are considered “potentially dangerous” (PPP) and require a special licence and muzzle in public.
- Many bars and restaurants allow dogs on outdoor terraces.
- You’ll find veterinary clinics, pet shops, and groomers readily available across the country.
- Hot weather in summer means pets need plenty of shade, water, and indoor time during peak heat.
🏥 Registering with a Vet in Spain
Once settled, it’s a good idea to register your pet with a local vet. They can assist with vaccinations, passports, and emergency care, and many speak English in popular expat areas.
🧳 Moving with Pets Made Simple
Relocating with pets takes some planning, but with the right preparation, your furry family members can settle into Spanish life just as well as you! Whether they’re sunbathing in your new garden or joining you on tapas trips, pets can thrive in Spain’s relaxed lifestyle.
