when do the local "fiestas" take place in mojacar?
Mojácar holds several festivals or “fiestas” over the course of the year. These are considered the most popular.
CARNAVAL
February. Preceding Lent, the celebration of this pagan festival is used by the comparsas to motivate themselves to make the most ingenious costumes; and to go out into the street to sing in the form of a chirigota the most relevant things that happened in the town that year. The parade is overflowing with frenzy and culminates, full of color, along the main road of the beach.
ENTIERRO DE LA SARDINA
Ash Wednesday. Once the carnival is over and as a prelude to Holy Week, this festival is celebrated, which symbolizes the passage from the carnal to the spiritual. Once the mass is officiated by a fictitious priest, the sardine (made of papier-mâché) is burned. Giving light and heat to the dark winter nights.
DIA DE ANDALUCIA
February 28. Mojácar celebrates the day of the Andalusian community with musical performances from the various municipal schools and official events.
La Vieja
Thursday in the middle of Lent. A day of eating in the countryside, according to an ancient custom, formed by groups of friends and family. The joy of the children comes when their “vieja” (a small doll with the appearance of an old woman, made on a wooden cross, with a cloth head filled with sweets, and decorated with tissue paper) is stuck on the ground and broken with stones, to then eat the banquet of sweets.
Holy Week
Holy Week in Mojácar contains a mystery created by the mixture of the divine and the pagan. Divinity through the floats, whose images are carried by the costaleros through the streets of the town, and paganism through the holiday atmosphere that, due to the good weather, people use to enjoy the town.
Saint Isidro
May. In honour of San Isidro Labrador. On Sunday around the 15th of May. Taking advantage of the arrival of good weather, the people of Mojácar celebrate the festival in honour of the Patron Saint, with music in the Barriada de la Fuente.
Moors & Christians
The weekend closest to June 10th. Commemorating the heroic epics that led to the cultural and religious exchange between Arabs and Christians, Mojácar celebrates its main festival. All the locals get involved in its organisation. The town squares are dressed up as Moorish Kabyles and Christian barracks. They begin on a Friday with the opening of the medieval market. The disembarkation, the trabucada, the medieval tournament on horseback, are some of the most notable activities. As a grand finale, on Sunday afternoon there is the grand parade that starts in the highest streets and ends at the foot of the town.
Night of San Juan
June 23 on the beaches of Mojácar. Bonfires, sardine feasts, music and fireworks until dawn are some of the activities that can be enjoyed on the most magical night of the year. The little ones enjoy a children’s bonfire, a gymkhana and gifts on the seashore, where tradition dictates that at midnight you have to bathe and make a wish to the fire that purifies everything.
PATRONAL FESTIVITIES OF SAN AGUSTÍN
28th August. These traditional festivities in honour of the patron saint are held for several days, always coinciding with a weekend. There are also sporting activities, fun street parties and “ribbon races”, on bikes for children and on horseback for single girls. The Floral Offering deserves special mention: women dressed in Mojaquero costume carry water and flowers from the fountain in a procession to the church.
DAY OF THE PATRON SAINT VIRGIN OF THE ROSARY
October 7th. Among the different activities, the most notable would be the traditional horse race of ribbons. The music band collects the ribbons at the Public Fountain and accompanies them to the place where the event takes place.
