Antas is a town full of history and culture dating back 1,000’s of years to when the area was the center of the prehistoric civilization of “El Argar”. Now, Antas is primarily a citrus producer exporting vast quantities of oranges and lemons to Europe.
Where is antas?
Antas is a municipality in the province of Almería, in the autonomous community of Andalucía, Spain.
The mountains of the Filabres roll down in undulating slopes at their north eastern end and here, on a fertile plain, lies Antas. The river, now usually dry, has carved a ravine through the soft sandstone, where birds nest in the holes in the cliffs. All around Antas there are numerous large orange and lemon groves, and other fruits and vegetables are grown on this highly cultivated area. The local market is known in the area for the quality of its produce.
The easiest way to get to Antas is traveling on the A7/E15 motorway and taking the exit 695 if you’re traveling from the Murcia region or the 695-B if you’re coming from Almeria. From here you simply follow the signs for about 10 minutes and you’ll find yourselves in the center of the village.

Antas holds every Monday a street market situated in the square “La Plaza – Era del Lugar”. This is a relatively new public square found just off the main highstreet of Antas. Free parking is available on neighbouring streets and is easily accessible on foot from most of the village.

Patron Festival
The most important of these is the fiesta dedicated to Saint Roch (San Roque) who is the patron of the village. The Saints day is celebrated every year around the 15th-16th August though the celebrations will generally take place over the course of the week.
Romeria
The romeria is a fiesta dedicated to the Virgen de la Cabeza and is held around the 8th September. The romeria initiates this celebration and in recent years this takes place during the weekend before.
Carnival
This annual event takes place during the month of February though the actual date changes each year.
La Vieja
This odd fiesta starts on the same day as lent. During this festival, which has religious origins, a coloured paper doll is dress as an old lady and filled with sweets and trinkets. The doll is then propped up with some canes in the shape of a cross and kids then throw stones until it breaks.
